Pursuing a Degree: Perceptions of Educational Leaders About Latino Males’ Resources, Barriers, and Support Systems for Higher Education

Abstract

Currently, Latino males have the lowest high school graduation rates as well as lowest college enrollment and completion rates of any subgroup in the U.S., at a time when the Latino population is the fastest growing in our country. This qualitative study sought to identify barriers, resources, and perceptions of secondary and postsecondary educational leaders to make recommendations to support Latino males in their educational attainment and persistence. The data analysis indicates the the need for more support structures for Latino males in secondary and post-secondary educational institutions, increased communication among these institutions, family involvement, and student organizations targeting Latino males specifically.
