Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Not: Using Cultural Assets to Beat the Odds

Abstract

Latino students are bombarded by a never-ending parade of racial macroaggressions; despite important struggles and movements to include multiple histories, experiences, and perspectives, the voices of Latinos remain marginalized and silent in education. The men in this study share how they have navigated through at least sixteen years of formal education. We argue that the stories of these men can suggest important strategies on how we as teacher educators can improve the academic success of other Latino students. Our attempt with this study is to delineate the distinct manifestations of various forms of discrimination and prejudice and change the negative stereotypes about Latinos
