Designing Smart Worlds: Automated Scoring of Learners’ Transportation Decisions in a Virtual Urban Commuting Simulation

Abstract

The Postropolis metropolitan university transportation scenario (PTS) is a series of virtual simulation activities that allows undergraduate students to make decisions about which modes of transportation to use to make the daily commute from home to the university campus. The primary purpose of developing the PTS was to develop innovative measurement instrumentation embedded within a game-like virtual simulation environment. As these measurement techniques are established for collecting reliable scores representing the content and context of an individual's transportation decisions, we can form a methodology that will facilitate informed assessment decisions about the performance learners within the PTS. Trends and correlations in choice scores from data collected during our pilot implementation of the PTS (N=122) will be presented and explored.
