Constructing Identity: Narratives of Latina Faculty in the Academy

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Abstract

This qualitative research study examined the cultural negotiations of Latina faculty members at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Specifically, the paper focuses on three themes that emerged from our analysis. These include: cooperation vs. competition; service as moral responsibility vs. service as work responsibility; and family obligations vs. career commitments. The paper demonstrates that the academic work that Latina faculty engage in on a daily basis is influenced by their moral understandings of appropriate ways of being and doing.
