Abstract

This paper investigates the pedagogic practices and approach to partnership with families in an early intervention service in Australia: the Residential Unit (RU) at Karitane in Sydney. It discusses how partnership creates conditions for effective pedagogical work with families and children at risk. Issues of partnership and family-centred approaches to early intervention are explored. An ethnographic methodology was adopted, and the study uses the FPM as a conceptual framework combined with practice theory to scaffold inference. Findings include detailed accounts of how trajectories of difficulty that can hamper child development can be disrupted, framing the intervention around notions of partnership and pedagogic work.
