Plastic-Fiction: Foucault and James

• In Event: (Re)imagining Foucault: New Directions in Foucauldian Scholarship

Abstract

This comparative reading of Michel Foucault and William James will address certain structuralist interpretations that seem to “erase” the subject completely and therefore make it especially difficult to theorize toward the education of humans. Moving from that analysis, this essay will begin to investigate the respective notions of fiction and plastic. I will argue that, when understood synthetically, these terms offer more than new interpretive resources for philosophers, they offer a striking way to think about curriculum, education, and life in general.
