The Influence of Alternative Break Programs on Students’ Career Plans

Abstract

Each year an estimated 64,000 college students participate in Alternative Break programs, spending their school breaks engaging in community service. While outcomes for students can be positive, critics of Alternative Breaks often point to the imbalance between student and community benefit. One way in which the benefit of Alternative Breaks may reach beyond the short-term experience is through inspiring students to continue to work for the benefit of communities through their future careers. Based on evidence from a multi-institutional study of students who participate in Alternative Break programs, this study explores the extent and manner in which Alternative Break experiences influence students’ career plans, and identifies the program characteristics which contribute to this career influence.
