Complicating Gender by Examining Title IX and Single-Sex Schooling With a Critical Race Theory Lens

Abstract

This policy analysis takes a multifocal approach by juxtaposing feminist ideals with tenets of critical race theory to problematize and interrogate Title IX and single-sex schooling. By examining gender policies as they affect students with identity multiplicities, reified notions of equality, segregation, and social justice are challenged and the complexities and messiness of educational policy contexts are made visible. The study forwards the importance of considering intersectionality; understanding the lives of students not only as they are shaped by gender alone but by other elements such as racism and classism. Findings imply using a critical, multi-focal approach to policy studies facilitates a robust contribution via its breadth and depth and intrinsically contributes to the public good.
