Envisioning Teacher Preparation Programs as High-Impact Community Service

Abstract

Accreditation is a primary method for measuring the quality of a professional organization. Standards for teacher preparation programs commonly include references to meeting community needs. This paper will show how preparation programs can demonstrate how they respond to contextualized standards by illustrating the relationships and interactions that occur between program participants and the community. Geographic information systems (mapping software), census data, public school data, and teacher preparation program data will be used to examining how teacher preparation programs provide a critical service to their local schools. This is a unique and virtually unprecedented technique for displaying the positive impact of teacher preparation programs on their constituent communities.
