Through Laughter and Through Tears: Emotional Responses to Antiracist Pedagogy

Tue, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Blue Whale

Abstract

This qualitative research uses inductive reasoning in conversation with critical race theory and antiracist research methodology to explore: What happens in a graduate school classroom when antiracism is the focus of study? and What is the experience of participants in these classrooms? Similar to scholarship on culturally responsive, critical, and antiracist pedagogy, this research has a specific focus on race and racism. However, it expands on methodological approaches and is a longitudinal study in a graduate school classroom. Results included participants’ emotional responses to antiracist pedagogy and how these emotions were racialized. “Non Satis Scire: To Know is Not Enough” therefore conclusions include implications for antiracist pedagogy in racially mixed classrooms as well as social justice education broadly.
