Abstract

In this era of accountability and narrow views of literacy, bilingual endorsement and non-bilingual endorsement pre-service teachers are faced with teaching an academically diverse student population using a scripted literacy curricula.
The purpose of this study was to have pre-service teachers compare the implementation of literacy-rich structures such as an author’s workshop, Latino literature circles/reader’s theater with the adopted scripted basal text. These 20 pre-service teachers had been guided to implement the adopted scripted basal text during their first semester of practicum and guided by the teacher educators to implement literacy-rich structures in their second semester.

The results of this study suggest that pre-service teachers saw the difference in student motivation and engagement with reading, writing, and thinking.
