The impact of a federally unrecognized identity for Indigenous peoples is little researched outside of anecdotal evidence, and research situated in the academy is nonexistent. This study
aims to describe the effects of being unrecognized as perceived by federally unenrolled Indigenous scholars. Survey results, combined with an analysis of curriculum vitas and oral history interviews with unenrolled Indigenous scholars, illustrate the impact of identity relations within academia on careers and research. Initial analyses reveal differential effects dependent on
the way in which the scholar is restricted from being enrolled with a recognized group in the United States.
