The Effect of PAT (Parents as Teachers) on Childhood Outcomes for a Migrant Population: Results From a Quasi-Experimental Design Study

Abstract

Researchers investigated the effect of Parents as Teachers (PAT) on child outcomes in a quasi-experimental. We compared the effect of PAT and regular pre-K services to regular pre-K child services. The sample consisted of migrant Hispanic children and their parents. Outcome measures for the birth to 36 months group consisted of E-LAP scores on six dimension: gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, language, self help, and social Emotional; those for the 36 to 72 months group consisted of LAP-3 scores on seven dimensions: cognitive, gross motor, language and literacy, fine motor, pre-writing, self-help, and personal social cognitive. Evidence suggests that the PAT curriculum had a positive effect on all the dimensions measured by the E-LAP and LAP-3 instruments.
