Investigating Impacts of Technology-Related Teacher Professional Development Designs: A Comparative Case Study

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

Using a case study design involving 4 teachers, this paper explores the impacts of two technology-related professional development (TTPD) designs. Both TTPD designs were aimed at helping teachers design activities using the wealth of resources available on the Web. The case study is part of a mixed-method study of a TTPD intervention involving 36 teachers and 1,200 students. The purpose of the case study was to better understand teachers’ perceptions of the TTPD, how it impacted their knowledge and classroom practices, and to expand understanding of quantitative results from the larger study. Identified themes included technological barriers, such as the lack of resources and time, and enablers, such as differentiated instruction, access to instructional games, interactive resources, and self-paced instruction.
