Using Leader Scholar Communities to Support Ed.D. Students Conducting Action Research as Dissertation Work

Abstract

Many educators are seeking education doctorates (Ed.D.) because the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) and its affiliate institutions have worked to design programs that produce school leaders. In many programs action research, action research dissertations, and means of support like Leader Scholar Communities (LSC) are being used to help students develop these qualities.

This study investigated such a program with a questionnaire designed to understand what a cohort of Ed.D. graduates thought about action research and LSCs. Results indicate strong support for both especially if action research is conducted in cycles and supported with individuals who stretch cognitive abilities and provide emotional support. This work benefits program developers, faculty, and students interested in action research in Ed.D. programs.
