This paper explores the history of Newark's Central High School from 1967 until 1973 with special attention to the larger political contestations and economic conditions. This paper seeks to answer: What were the demands of educational activists and reformers and how did they change during these years? And, finally, was Central High School changed by Newark’s political and organizational turmoil? I propose to use history and organizational theory to help us understand how Newark’s Central High School was structured and constrained by its institutional field and political context.
