Digital Gameplay: Enhancing Science Content Learning and Problem Solving With Early Adolescent Students

Abstract

Rising popularity of video games among youth has led to an increased interest in the educational potential of gameplay, especially with STEM content. This pilot study investigated the impact of digital gameplay (using a NSF-funded game called CRYSTAL ISLAND) on science content learning and understanding of the problem-solving process with early adolescent students (ages 10-12). Results demonstrated that students increased their factual knowledge about landforms and ecosystems as well as their understanding of the problem-solving process. Initial results informed the design of the target study involving approximately 150 students. These results will contribute to researchers’ quest to understand what games work with early adolescent students and in what contexts, with the ultimate goal of impacting student achievement and complex thinking.
