Sexism in Iranian Natural Sciences Textbooks

Abstract

In this study I conduct a content analysis of the images illustrated in grades 6, 7 and 8 Iranian science textbooks to find an answer to the following question: do Iranian science textbooks at middle school level portray natural sciences as a male-only domain? This study is mixed, offering both qualitative and quantitative evidence and is based on feminist theories. The textbooks that I will examine are published by the Ministry of Education for use in the school year 2010-11 and posted on the internet for free public access at http://www.chap.sch.ir/.
