Disrupting Currents: Interdisciplinary Pedagogical Encounters With Interactive New Media/Artwork Within Cultural/History Museums as Learning Sites

Abstract

This presentation explores how interdisciplinary research/creation contributes to informed discourse about coastal cultures and ocean environmental stewardship. We present the research outcomes of our three-year project, sited primarily in Canadian westcoast maritime communities and supported by a grant from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. We describe our interactive art/new media installation exhibited in a National Historic Site museum and developments for exhibitions in museums in Haida Gwaii and Japan, that propose to advance an encounter with history as critical inquiry into contemporary life of these regions. We will also discuss how participatory/immersive art installations and interactive technology can provide unique opportunities for teaching and learning experiences and embodied ways of knowing for school teachers and community educators.
