A Critical Review of Drawing as a Method for Accessing the Child’s Perspective in Research

Abstract

A review of literature reveals that researchers frequently use drawings as a way of obtaining data from children often viewed as too young for adult-orientated techniques but also that this approach can be used routinely, without considering its function or efficacy within the research process. The objective of my research is to explore drawing as a method of gathering children’s perspectives, raising important methodological and analytical issues. The approach taken is not to consider drawing as a reproduction of reality, but attempt to understand children’s drawings as a semiotic vehicle, where messages are created through signification. The study involved visits to the homes of eight children who were asked to represent their perspectives on play through the medium of drawing.
