Global Childhoods: Portraits of Living in the 21st Century

Abstract

This presentation provides portraits of teaching and learning from six selected Asian locations including Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia to challenge our common assumptions and understandings of the developmentally appropriate practices about literacy education in classrooms. According to the latest PISA survey, Asian students appear to perform very well to challenge the world’s common perceptions about education and schooling systems in Asia. Facilitated by groups of researchers from Asia, this paper investigates what the experiences of childhood across the six geopolitical and sociocultural spaces in Asia look like.
