Abstract

Few cohort studies have investigated the impact of early academic achievement under the No Child Left Behind legislation. The focus so far has been on disadvantages associated with socioeconomic status, special education status, minority status and English language deficiency. This is the first cohort study to investigate the long-term effects of Native Hawaiian students’ grade 3 reading ability on their reading performances at grades 5, 8 and 10 on the Hawaii State Assessment. The unique impact due to early academic deficiency over and beyond the effects of other risk factors was demonstrated through multilevel modeling. Reading deficiency at grade 3 was shown to impact future reading performance more than all other risk factors combined.
