Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the barriers that impacted the learning trajectory in magnitude for first grade children identified as struggling in numbers and operations. During this presentation, we present data from a pre- and post assessment designed to examine student understanding of magnitude. The study included 74 students, including 12 who were identified as struggling in numbers and operations. We present a learning progression for magnitude that characterizes the strategies and contributing knowledge for students struggling in mathematics and those demonstrating typical development. We discuss barriers that hindered student progression for the learning trajectory.
