Cross-National Study of Classroom Environments, Attitudes, and Academic Self-Efficacy in Middle School Mathematics

Abstract

This study with seventh and eighth grade students (N = 1309) compared mathematics classes in Hong Kong and the USA in terms of learning environment, attitudes toward mathematics, and academic self-efficacy. Four scales of the What Is Happening In this Class? (WIHIC) questionnaire, two scales of the Test of Mathematics-Related Attitudes (TOMRA) and an academic self-efficacy scale were used to assess, respectively, perceptions of the learning environment, attitudes towards mathematics, and academic efficacy. Questionnaires were found to exhibit sound factorial validity and reliability, some interesting differences emerged between Hong Kong and the USA, and associations were found between the learning environment and students\\\' attitudes and academic self-efficacy.
