Comparative Analysis of Educational Policies and Research Explanations of the Achievement of Latinos in the United States, Latin Americans in Spain, and Dutch Turkish Students in the Netherlands

Abstract

Using a comparative lens, this paper analyzes through secondary and primary research, the different policy/research approaches used to explain the academic achievement of Latino high school students in the U. S. over the past forty years, second generation Dutch-Turkish high school students over the past 30 years and Latin American secondary high school students in Spain for the past 25 years. Identified are the normative and pragmatic stances of these policies and research trends, the parallels and differences of each, the ways they improve the education of students in different contexts, and the lessons learned through case studies of students undergoing schooling in each of these contexts.
