The Effects of Spirituality on College Outcomes: Variation among Academic Disciplines

Abstract

Using multilevel modeling, this study examined how the effects of student’ spiritual/religious engagement on their affective college outcomes vary by academic disciplines. The study utilized data on 43,014 students who participated in the 2008 University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES), which is a statewide longitudinal survey of UC undergraduate students. The results indicated that the effects of spiritual/religious engagement on both leadership skills and social satisfaction with college are conditional depending on academic majors. Some academic disciplines explained the variability of the effect, which also suggests that students in some academic disciplines benefit more or less than their peers in other academic fields.
