Teacher Working Conditions, Satisfaction and Commitment in Bureau of Indian Education Schools: A Schools and Staffing Survey Analysis

Abstract

This research project utilizes nationally representative data from the 2007-2008 Schools and Staffing Survey administered by the National Center of Education Research to examine differences in levels of teacher organizational commitment, teacher satisfaction and organizational working conditions between Bureau of Indian Education operated and tribally controlled schools in order to address the chronic teacher turnover problem at Bureau of Indian Education funded schools. The results of this study will provide tribal and federal policy makers with statistical information integral for the development of policy initiatives which reallocate resources currently expended on teacher replacement costs toward more competitive salary schedules, greater professional development opportunities and other school level practices conducive to increasing teacher retention.
