Contextual Factors Influencing Canadian South Asian Young Women Selecting a Career in the Sciences

Abstract

One of the major transitions that young adults face is making plans regarding their career choice. The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions made by Canadian South Asian young women between the ages of 20-25 regarding the different factors that affect their career decision-making process while in university pursuing an undergraduate degree in the sciences. The central focus of the research was to describe their perception of contextual forces and their sense of self-efficacy in managing the career decision-making process. The results of this study would add to the literature on the educational experiences of Canadian South Asian young women and some of the reasons underlying their life choices.
