Abstract

Teacher preparation has been a core element of higher education since its inception in the United States. For the most part, however, teacher education has been peripheral in scholarship on the history of higher education. Based on a wide-ranging and in-depth review of the historiographies of teacher education and higher education, this paper explores this absence and what greater attention to teacher education would add to the historiography of higher education. Placing teacher preparation at the center of analysis will help historians make great strides toward understanding the nineteenth-century college and including the experiences of all types of students, as well as furthering understanding of the role of markets and hierarchy in shaping the American system of higher education.
