The Impact of Advanced Geometry and Measurement Curriculum Units on the Mathematics Achievement of First-Grade Students

Abstract

The primary goal of Project X is to develop and field-test advanced geometry and measurement units for students in the primary grades. This paper reports the mathematics achievement results for students in Grade 1 at 12 urban and suburban sites in four states. Data analyses indicate statistically significant gains for the intervention group from pre- to post-testing on the ITBS mathematics subtest and the Open-Response Assessment. Using HLM, no statistical differences between the intervention and comparison groups were found on the ITBS indicating that Grade 1 math concepts were not negatively impacted by this extended study of geometry and measurement. However, statistically significant differences favoring the intervention over the comparison group were found on the Open-Response Assessment with large effect sizes.
