Curriculum Influences the Accuracy of Comprehension Monitoring Among Seventh Graders

Abstract

We explored whether exposure to different curricula during elementary years influenced metacomprehension accuracy among 7th and 8th graders. This research was conducted in a charter school that emphasizes deep learning through an exploratory learning curriculum. In literacy instruction the curriculum emphasizes reading for meaning and inference building. The school recently expanded enrollments, doubling enrollments in 7th and 8th grades. Thus, approximately half of the students had long-term exposure to the curriculum and the other half did not. Metacomprehension accuracy was significantly better for long-time students (N = 31) than for newcomers (N = 40). Thus, monitoring accuracy is influenced by exposure to different curricula.
