Cross-Level Faculty Learning Communities: A School-University Partnership Professional Development Model

Abstract

This case study reports a U.S. school-university partnership faculty development initiative that started in 2006. By examining student work, grades 9-14, secondary and postsecondary faculty learn ways to improve students’ readiness for college-level work. At the same time, the innovative model is anchored in democratic practices which support faculty learning and intellectual engagement in a learning community environment. Data will be reported from activities in five general education disciplines: English/language arts, mathematics, life science, social studies, and the world languages of French, German, and Spanish. The model provides an effective means to promote the reflective practice and intellectual engagement of secondary and postsecondary faculty and, in turn, bolster students’ academic transitions.
