A Comparison of Mantel-Haenszel and DFIT (Differential Functioning of Items and Tests) on the Detection of Multidimensional Differential Item Functioning

Abstract

This study is intended to investigate the application of Mantel-Haenszel (MH) in the detection of multidimensional differential item functioning. According to the previous findings (Tzou, Chiang, & Wang, 2011), the result derived from differential functioning of items and tests (DFIT) is used as the baseline for this study. The researchers manipulate five cases of ability distribution of the reference and focal groups, and two DIF magnitudes (0.3, 0.5) which reflect moderate and large DIF. The results will compare the type I error rates and the power rates of MH and DFIT. The researchers also examine the effect sizes of MH, and try to establish the corresponding DFIT indices with the ETS scale. The DIF type is restricted to uniform DIF.
