This research aims at building knowledge about how to organize the curriculum for teaching mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT). Studies have investigated the nature and scope of MKT, and a number of researchers have argued that mathematics teacher education should concentrate on teaching teachers MKT. However, MKT is a relatively new and subtle idea, with implications for mathematics teacher education that still need to be developed and specified. To develop a conceptual framework for teaching MKT, we conducted this research through an iterative analysis of the literature and records of practice collected in classrooms where teacher educators and teachers are working with the curriculum materials designed to focus on MKT, in particular mathematical definitions.
