“They Will Succeed”: What Latina/o Parents Desire to Create a College Pathway for Their Children

Abstract

Increasing the number of Latina/o students in postsecondary education is pivotal, as only 10% of Latina/os living in the U.S. earn a college degree (Oseguera, Locks & Vega, 2009). By drawing on the experiences of 58 Latina/o parents who participated in a college access and readiness program, this qualitative study identifies what they perceive to be roadblocks preventing their children from having access to a postsecondary education. This study also study sheds light on what Latina/o parents desire schools will do to create a college pathway for their children - their needs, their voices, their concerns, their hopes – and what they believe schools ought to do to support a new generation of Latina/os with no less than a university-level education.
