Implementation of Education for Citizenship and Human Rights in Primary: Analysis of the Teacher’s Profile

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 10:15am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 18

Abstract

In Spain, Education for Citizenship and Human Rights (EC) was introduced in the compulsory curriculum of Primary Education in 2009-2010. The competences to be developed in this subject are complex, with only 35 hours being devoted to it in the 5th and 6th years. Nevertheless, EC has been a source of controversy and rejection by different social sectors. The aim of this study, which combines quantitative and qualitative methods, is to present a first diagnosis of this subject’s implementation from the analysis of curricular materials, semi-structured interviews, and classroom implementation. In this case, we present the analysis of the teacher’s profile carried out through a semi-structured interview to 29 teachers. Results can guide the designation of the appropriate teacher’s profile.
