Economic Competencies in Swiss Upper Secondary Education

Abstract

Given the growing complexity of economic processes in a modern world requires economic competencies for social participation and employability. Currently, only little is known about such competencies in Switzerland. Therefore our study assesses the economic competencies of students at the end of upper secondary education. The representative sample comprises students from senior high schools and professional maturity schools in Switzerland (N = 2,700). In the presentation we describe the theoretical background of our cross-sectional investigation. In the empirical part we analyze (1) the dimensionality of the economic knowledge and skills-test, (2) the ability-levels within the dimensions and (3) the impact of several hypothesized predictors on economic knowledge.
