In the frame of cognitive load theory, different indicators are interesting for analyzing human learning processes. Recent studies analyze learning performance and cognitive load, an indicator for learners’ invested mental effort. The present work presents a new method, which directly measures inhibition processes as an indicator for cognitive load. This method is characterized by a continuous intra-individual measure, which is, in contrast to until now used secondary tasks, independent of the presentation mode of learning instructions (primary task): Learners execute a practiced and internalized easy rhythm continuously by foot-tapping. The suitability of this method was examined within two multimedia studies. Results show that rhythm precision allows a continuous measurement of cognitive load, which is sensitive to variations of instructional design.
