Restructuring the Superintendency: Voices From the Field

Abstract

This paper addresses the recommendations of voices from the field regarding the priorities which superintendent preparation institutions and professors ought to consider as they construct and offer programs. Based on an online survey of all 869 (41.4% return rate) Illinois public school superintendents, current superintendents emphasize the need for programs to stress mission and vision, communications, teamwork, fiscal acuity, and establishing high expectations vis-a-vis academic rigor. Antithetically, the relative lack of importance attached to leadership change theory, diversity, and technology by practitioners are reasons for concern and should be considered by those designing and implementing superintendent preparation programs. These areas are discussed in detail and recommendations are made pertaining to modifications needed in superintendent preparation programs.
