Coupling the Theoretical With the Empirical: An Investigation of Social Network Analysis Techniques and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model for Human Development

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a practical application of social network analysis by coupling the theoretical with the empirical for special education research. Using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Base year data, a network is identified by examining the connections that occur between supports. These supports, and the frequency of them, are then visually displayed and compared to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model for human development. Preliminary results indicate that social network analysis techniques, when coupled with a developmental model such as Urie Bronfennbrenner’s can offer a unique and practical interpretation for parents, teachers, practitioners and policy makers.
