Abstract

The Early College High School model is designed as a means to improve student graduation rates, college attendance, and overall student achievement. A multi-level logistic regression explored the relationship of student achievement for students attending early college high schools compared with traditional high schools in North Carolina. This study showed (a) when student characteristics and school type are considered together the nature of these significant relationships were different from when only considering school type, (b) 90% of the time when student characteristics and school type were found to be significant predictors early college students had greater odds of passing state tests and/or making expected academic growth, (c) the results failed to demonstrate an overall pattern that favored students or schools.
