Abstract

The paper discusses design and implementation of a tool (Elementary Science Question Evaluation Rubric) that aims at helping new and practicing elementary science teachers to evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of their science questions. The study focused on the design of multiple-choice science questions suitable for the use with electronic response systems. The tool was piloted in two science methods courses for pre-service elementary teachers at a large research North American University during 2010-2011 academic year and it was validated by practicing science teachers. The tool encourages teachers to design pedagogically effective science questions through reflecting on pedagogical and content knowledge of their questions.
