Using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2007, this study examines international patterns in eighth grade mathematics teacher practices and how these practices are related to students’ mathematics achievement. First, we present descriptive patterns in instructional strategies across multiple countries. Then, we present the results of HLM analyses conducted to predict mathematics achievement using measures of teachers’ classroom practices. Student, teacher and school covariates are included in multiple HLM models across countries. The implications of the findings across countries are discussed.
