The Exceptional Teachers for Disadvantaged Schools (ETDS) project sets out to design a new model of Australian teacher education responding to recent demands for quality education in low SES and disadvantaged schools. The study is designed to ascertain to what extent a revised teacher education curriculum model is making a difference to pre-service teachers and graduates. This paper reports on the first year trial of the project. Current data sets indicate a clear pre- and post-practicum shift in beliefs and concerns regarding teaching in disadvantaged schools resulting from a more sophisticated understanding of poverty combined with curriculum and pedagogical research associated with educational disadvantage, and exposure to disadvantaged school placements.
