Making a Successful Transition From Community College to a Four-Year University

Tue, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 212&213

Abstract

Many students seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher now enter postsecondary education through the portal of community college, intending to transfer to a 4-year institution. However, relatively little research has examined the adjustment of community college transfer students once they reach the 4 year institution. The impact of programming to facilitate the transition experience and support the educational and social adjustment of community college students who transfer to selective, 4 year institutions is even less well understood. This proposed presentation will present data that examines targeted programming to support community college transfer students. Findings suggest that a summer program supported academic achievement and provided participants with a greater sense of social integration.
