Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable student teacher observation instrument. Over a two year period, 2,750 observations of K-12 student teachers were collected at a large suburban university in the Southwest. Reliability and validity were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis with a Principal Component Analysis. Results yielded 5 factors and moderate to strong correlations for both the general pedagogy and content pedagogy items. Development of this instrument is consistent with the idea that educators need efficient, rigorous, and high quality assessment instruments to measure pre-service teachers and teacher education programs.
