This study explores the ways in which action research, an established professional development strategy in traditional schools, was implemented in a virtual school setting through a year-long case study of thirty virtual school educators coached by four experienced action research coaches. Data include participant artifacts, interviews, recorded web conferencing sessions and email communication between coaches and educators. Results suggest action research is a viable option for virtual school educators, however, the unique context of virtual schools requires new implementation strategies and makes possible new forms of inquiry. In addition, this study revealed insights into the functioning of virtual schools and the pedagogy and practice used by virtual school educators.
