Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Medication Vacations and Parent-Child Sex Differences

Abstract

In a study of 259 parents of children with ADHD, the use of medication vacations according to parent-child sex dyads was examined. These medication vacations for children with ADHD can have deleterious consequences for these children in school but are not incomprehensible given parental concerns about medications. Results of the current study suggest that fathers appear to report endorsing medication vacations more with their sons as opposed to their daughters with ADHD. There did not appear to be any significant differences among mothers. Results of the current study conclude with directions for future research and practice.
