Comparing Grade-Point Averages of Black Greek Letter Organizations in Predominantly White Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Abstract

Scholars have inquired into the academic success of BGLO members, evaluating trends nationwide across various institutional types. What was found was that BGLO students are strong average students, but do not achieve at the same rates as their counterparts in other Greek Letter Organizations. Yet, HBCUs were not part of these analyses. Given the mission of HBCUs and the research regarding student outcomes, this omission is troubling. Thus, the purpose of the present study is to explore academic achievement among BGLOs in an HBCU as compared to two predominantly White institutions (PWI) of similar size and scope. Our inquiry begins to answer the question of whether the institutional culture of an HBCU may mediate academic success among BGLO members.
