The paper uses data from the IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2009 to examine the association between students’ socioeconomic status and different forms of current and expected civic participation across the 38 countries participating in the study, then, it tests whether this relationship is influenced by the civic learning opportunities offered in schools. Provisional results suggest the existence of socioeconomic gaps in the civic participation of students in most countries, and that some school based civic learning opportunities seem to be able to ameliorate them. Differences in patterns across countries and types of participation, and policy implications are briefly discussed.
